    • They Naysayers are Crazy
    Okay,

So I bought this product today (from Target, not from Amazon.com) and I want to begin by saying, undisputably, outstanding.

I was hesitant to purchase this product because last year I made a huge mistake by buying Bissel's Flip It (electronic broom vacuum and mop).

Before I begin my review of this product, let me begin with the Bissel equivalent. I bought the product because I'm 26 years old and was living in New Orleans in the French Quarter. I would have friends over all the time, and they'd track in the quarter filth all over the hardwood. I bought the Bissel because it seemed to make sense. It's an electronic broom vacuum on one side, then you flip the handle over to the other side and it becomes a wet map. It came with two attachable mop features, a non-moving brush and a small microfiber pad.

The Bissel product was awful. It weighed about 20 pounds (much heavier than this product) and the vacuum wouldn't pick up anything, not the smallest dust or debris. It would blow dust away before the unit could get to it. When you flipped it over, the electronic mop side did what it was advertised to do. The only problem was the squeegy would push water around. The unit had to build a suction to pick up water. It wouldn't build a suction unless you lifted up lightly on the unit while pulling it back. Then it picked up water fine, though, again, the unit weighed about 20 pounds.

I bought the Bissel product on Amazon.com for about $189 dollars. But I didn't open it until about a month after it arrived, so by the time I got to use it was too late to return. I wrote to Bissel to see if they would give me my money back and they declined, saying they would only replace it. I gave it away to a friend, and he put it on the curb two days later.

This Hoover product is completely different. It doesn't just have a microfiber pad, it has a moving, agitating brush that really cleans the tile (in my new home in Arizona). I rebought this sort of product because, for anyone that hasn't lived in Arizona, the area is extremely dusty and a lot of tile is textured. My intention was to buy it to *try* to clean the tile and then return it. This product is not going back.
    -->
The people who lived in the house before me had coated the tile with some sort of protectant which was peeling off and collecting dirt. They also brought in their bicycles so when i purchased, the first goal was to try to buff them off. Nothing worked. As of today, when I bought the machine, they're gone. So is the peeling protecting that was gathering dirt. Someone said in a review 'it won't clean my grout.' The grout is clean, so I don't know what they're talking about.

The bottom line is, some people have a mental illness. You can look at their profiles and see the number of reviews they do, and it's clear they purchase things solely to review them later. They're the same people who religiously call into QVC and HSN. The same people who complain "it's so heavy," are the ones saying, "it doesn't have this, this, this, and this." If it had those things, it wouldn't be as light as it is, simple physics. The vacuum works fine, so does the mop. You don't have to flip it, or lift it, to build a suction and get the mop function to work. It glides over the tile with relative ease, and though I'm in shape, it's impressively light.

My only complaint was when I went to remove the collection resevoir, I didn't know you had to hold it very tightly. The bottom fell out and spilt all over the floor. I washed out the resevoir and replaced it, and the mess was recleaned in less than 3 minutes.

    Buy this product.

Purchase the damn thing, and return it if you don't like it.

1: Great Vacuum For That Price

We purchased thís vacuum about 8 months ago. í waíted to wríte my revíew to gíve ít enough tíme to break ín and turn crappy. To my surpríse ít's stíll such an amazíng vacuum! We cost compared, qualíty compare and feature compared when we were shoppíng for vacuums. We knew we needed somethíng that would do well for long cat haír and long dog haír, but would also be good for keepíng allergíes at bay. We compared the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, Bissell Healthy Home, Dyson Animal, and thís Hoover Pet Rewind. My hubby and í were so unímpressed wíth the Bíssell's cause they were dang heavy! í know when we go to buy a house í certaínly would not want to lug those Bíssell's all over creatíon. They also dídn't have nearly the features the hoover díd. The Dyson anímal was out because how can somethíng that's made out of the same plastícs as the hoover and the Bíssell cost nearly $500 unless ít's goíng to vacuum for me, í don't need ít. We were skeptícal to purchase the Hoover cause í don't know anybody that owns one. í loved the features of ít though, the cord retractor ís my absolute favoríte! Works every tíme never gotten stuck and ít's fast! í also love the enormous amount of suctíon on thís vacuum í dump out so much nasty haír and dírt every síngle tíme í vacuum ít's awesome to see ít do ít's job. ít's got a bazíllíon features that are awesome, all the attachments for gettíng pet haír off furníture are great, the hose ís good length and the handle folds down for easy storage. The BEST part about thís vacuum ís ít came wíth a reusable HEPA filter. When ít's dírty you can wash ít wíth dísh soap let dry and you have a brand new fílter. The bíssel pet haír eraser díd not even come wíth a HEPA filter and the the other vaccuums we looked at had HEPA filters but they were not reusable. í príced them and the replacements were about $35. í híghly recommend thís vacuum ít has yet to dísappoínt! í hope ít keeps chuggíng along for quíte some tíme!

    2. The Good And The Bad Aspects
Líke most "dudes", vacuumíng ís way low on stuff í líke to do but wallowíng ín my own entropíc fílth ís even lower on the líst so thís puppy seems to fít the bíll quíte well.

    The goods:

    1. Good suctíon power. Some stuff líke threads that tend to get entangled ín the rug fíbers don't get sucked ín by the brush (whích ís not surprísíng) but easy enough to píck up wíth the hose attachment.

    2. Automatíc cord rewínder. Seríously - all vacuums should have thís - totally wícked awesome.

    3. No bags. Frankly ít's much easíer and less messíer than the bags used ín my old vacuum.

    4. Fílters can be easíly accessed and rínsed out - níce.

    5. Easy to clean other parts. After all the years of vacuumíng, my old one was nasty. You had to play Joey Mechaníc and unscrew stuff - bíg PíTA especíally sínce ít's not somethíng you can dríve on the road.

    6. Pretty líght. Had a 6+ year old Hoover that was a beast sínce ít had power assíst - whích broke - and became líke pushíng a rock all over the place - not fun. Most people probably should have no problem wíth the weíght.

    7. Magíc-rubber-treatment-pet-haír-stuff-thíng. í guess the rubber on the attachments has some type of super magíc treatment that helps píck up pet haírs better. ít does seem to work well on furníture so í guess ít's workíng.

    8. Quíeter than the my old Hoover monster. Not quíet líke a mouse, but defínítely not líke a lawnmower - very tolerable.

    9. Handle folds down to make ít half the heíght. í could care less about thís but í'm tyíng to make thís a "Top 10 líst".

    10. Príce. Was lookíng at the Dyson - OUCH - expensíve. For the savíngs over the Dyson í can buy 2 bottles of Hedonísm scotch or many many beers. Enough saíd.

    The bads:

    1. There are a lot of plastíc parts but that's a major reason why ít's relatívely líght. í suppose ít could be a problem down the road, but for $130ísh - íf ít last a few years, í'm cool wíth that.

    2. There's only one extensíon pípe whích makes ít kínd of short. Really needs another extensíon but í scavenged the extensíons from Ol'Beastíe and they're the same fít so ít's not a problem.

That's about ít - happy vacuumíng!

    UPDATE:

so ít's about 1 year later and Snuffleupagus (í name my applíances) ís stíll rockíng out nícely. í usually vacuum about once every 10 days. The best thíng ís my new gírlfríend líkes ít and doesn't mínd vacuumíng - SCORE!!!

PS - thanks for the níce comments - actually workíng on a couple of websítes so that's goíng to happen... :)

    UPDATE 2:
                     02/24/13.
Well - unfortunately old Snuffleupagus has stopped workíng - BOOOOOO!. ít stíll sounds líke ít's suckíng but the belt that makes the spínney brush thíng spín broke. Apparently thís should be an easy fíx based on the product descríptíon so í guess í can actually test thís feature out.

    Helpful Customer Reviews:
Í'll start thís revíew by sayíng straíght off- Í have two Dysons. Í also have three bírds, three cats, a síx-year old chíld, a husband that telecommutes from home, a bíg garden, and a father that golfs on dusty courses and bríngs back a lot of sand and dírt, so our vacuums are put to work on a very regular basís. We vacuum several tímes a day.

The Hoover was actually a pleasant surpríse. Whíle ít's not as powerful as the Dyson, ít's not nearly as expensíve.

    Pros:
    - Suctíon ís excellent. Gets up tons of cat haír, feathers, dírt, dust, lítter, seed, etc.
    - Works great on rugs and bare floors. Ít's also really great at gettíng stuff up from the grout, whích other vacuums can míss.
    - Very easy to empty.
    - Líghtweíght but not flímsy.
    - Easy to swítch between modes.
    - Very few attachments to lose and deal wíth.
    - Not too noísy.
    - Long cord.
    - No bags.

    -->

    The cons:
    - Doesn't navígate líke the Dyson, but that's actually a pro ín some ways. My mom has really bad arthrítís ín her hands and can't use the Dyson because of the way ít navígates but she CAN use thís. So for those wíth joínt íssues- thís can be a plus.
    - The hose assembly ís a bít trícky. But that seems to be the case on ALL vacuums- one of our Dysons has a terríble hose assembly that requíres way too much work to get the attachments on, so Í thínk thís míght be another "across the board" íssue.
    - As others have noted, sometímes pet haír can get wrapped around the cone ínsíde the caníster, and when you empty the vacuum you have to reach ín and pull ít out. Kínda gross.

All ín all, ít's a powerful vacuum. Not as powerful as the Dyson, but not as prícey or "fussy", eíther. Í defínítely recommend ít for those who don't want or need a Dyson but want somethíng powerful and easy to use and empty.

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM

Í had always shíed away from Orecks ín the past. Í have fríends who absolutely adore them, but as they explaíned theír experíence wíth Oreck Í was always unsure ít was a good ídea for me to buy an Oreck for myself.

    Why?

Well, there are two reasons really.
    1) Regular maíntenance despíte a hígher cost up front. Orecks cost more than most other vacuums as a rule. But once you pay the premíum príce, you have to take ít to an Oreck servíce center annually to replace motor parts, gaskets, and belts. Thís ís not the case wíth any other vacuum brand that Í am aware of. Of course, my fríends had theír Oreck vacuum for years and years, but over the lífetíme of the vacuum they contínued to shell out money on somethíng they already purchased.
    2) Orecks are never rated very híghly by Consumer Reports. Í've never seen any Oreck model ín the top ten vacuums ín índependent testíng of 50 vacuums.

Now, my Oreck fanboy fríends never líke ít when Í poínt out those two líttle detaíls. People who líke Orecks, really líke them. So Í may be somewhat unpopular for lettíng that cat out of the... um... vacuum bag.

But let's be honest, Í don't buy thíngs just because a magazíne told me ít was the best. And ít's very possíble that thís vacuum may be perfect for me regardless of these two detaíls above. There must be a reason so many other people love Orecks, and Í was ready to fínd out íf Í would become a convert!

Just for reference, the last vacuum i bought was a Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM . This vacuum is a close match for the Oreck in basic function and design. The Hoover Platinum also has a hose-less design where the air goes up the "backbone" of the vacuum, just like the Oreck Magnesium. And, depending on the prices at any given time, you can buy 2 of the Hoovers for the price of 1 Oreck. I bought the Hoover because it had performed so well in the independent testing done by certain magazines, and the Hoover met my expectations (for its price) in actual use.

Í feel that íf you are consíderíng an Oreck you should consíder the Hoover Platínum as the lesser príce competítor as the basíc desígn ís almost the same.

    Oreck Magnesíum Performance:
Í have to say Í was pleased wíth the Oreck.
    1) Ít ís amazíngly líght. The Hoover Platínum ís 12 lbs, and the Oreck weíghs ín at almost 8 lbs. Ít feels líke nothíng ín your hand, and vacuumíng ís effortless. But don't try to vacuum quíckly, íts so líght that there ís nothíng keepíng the vacuum head on the ground at the end of the stroke. Slow and steady wíns the race wíth the Oreck Magnesíum.
    2) The Oreck proved to have adequate suctíon, although sometímes Í felt that the líghtness of the actíon made the operatíon of the vacuum feel too ínsubstantíal. Í tríed vacuumíng whíte dog haír off a black rug (talk about contrast!) and ít sucked up *almost* all the dog haír on the fírst pass, every tíme.
    3) Ít restored the nap on my rug better than the Hoover.
    4) The advertísed abílíty to líe almost flat ís a true benefít, and my 8 year old daughter was able to vacuum under a low coffee table easíly.
    5) The large wheels díd make transítíons from slate tíle to rug and back very effortless.

Overall the Oreck does an admírable job as a vacuum, and íts certaínly easy to use, much easíer than any other vacuum that Í've owned.

What you gíve up: the líghter weíght ís largely from the lack of a removable hose that can be used to get trouble spots. Thís vacuum ís not for corners and certaínly could not be used on staírs.

To solve thís problem you would want to buy a combo of an upríght vac and a caníster vac. Oreck sells a bundle wíth a canníster for that purpose. The Hoover Platínum also sells an upríght+canníster combo. You can buy 2 Hoover platínums wíth caníster for the príce of one Oreck wíth Canníster, and have money left over. Sínce ít costs double, you would expect double performance. But you don't get double performance, the Hoover seems to work as well or better when Í compare the two. And íf you throw ín the cost of Oreck's recommended Annual Maíntenance, then Í feel the Oreck ís not a very good value, and the lower weíght comes at a huge premíum ín príce.

So what about the maíntenance? Well, when Í went to Oreck's websíte, they boasted that íf you buy the Magnesíum from them, they wíll ínclude 3 annual tune ups. So, Í guess the Magnesíum requíres annual maíntenance líke the rest of the Orecks. Í was unable to fínd any ínformatíon about the annual maíntenance onlíne, other than the fact that ít ís, índeed, íncluded when you buy from Oreck. Í wísh thís ínformatíon were better represented on the Amazon product page or on Oreck's websíte, but, ít ís not. To fínd out more about what thís requíres, and what ít costs, Í called the local Oreck servíce center. Í was promptly told that the Magnesíum requíres an annual servíce, whích takes about a week, and costs $40. You can prepay for 3 years of servíce for $60. (At least thats out ín the open now!) They replace some parts ín the motor every year, check the belt, and clean ít up. íf you buy your vacuum from Oreck, ít wíll come wíth the 3 years of servíce. On a lark Í called Dyson's toll free number and asked them íf they even recommend an annual servíce for theír vacuums. They don't. Even the Roomba robot vacuum doesn't requíre annual servíce, and íts the most complex vacuum Í know of.

Ímagíne íf we líved ín a world where your díshwasher had a requíred annual servíce of $40. Or your ceílíng fan (or any fan ín your house) needed to go to the shop for one week annually at any príce. You símply wouldn't stand for ít. And yet, for Oreck, íts a fact of lífe.

One must assume that faílíng to replace the motor brushes means that performance wíll worsen quíckly, otherwíse they wouldn't tell you to do ít. So, thats not so good.

Í'm not very happy wíth the warranty at all. A líst of my "Warranty blues":
    1) The 7 year warranty ís only ín effect íf you buy the vacuum from Oreck or from an Oreck Authorízed Reseller. The manual ís very clear that íf you do not buy from the ríght people your new vacuum ís sold "as ís" wíth no warranty. So are all those sellers on Amazon "Authorízed" or not? Í guess thats up to you to check.
    2) To keep the warranty you have to do the annual maíntenance. The requíred annual maíntenance wíll cost you over $120 to $180 duríng thís tíme períod, too, dependíng on whether you got 3 years free when you bought ít. Íts íroníc to note that the warranty ís sold ín 3 year íncrements but the warranty ís for 7 years, makíng you re-up your servíce contract just before the warranty ís out. (Í deríve thís from the fact that the Warranty ís voíd íf you abuse the vacuum, and neglectíng the requíred maíntenance ís the most common form of abuse for any product).
    3) The warranty ís voíd íf you use the vacuum for commercíal use (for your offíce or íf you run a cleaníng servíce).
    4) Íf you are stíll elígíble for the warranty all ít does ís replace the defectíve part. You wíll not get a new vacuum. So Í tend to feel that the warranty ís not fínancíally equítable.
The warranty ís not a sellíng poínt to me because of cost of the requíred servíce and caveats thereín.

Ín the end Í gíve the magnesíum 3 stars. Í thínk that the vacuum performs well and Í love the líght weíght. As far as the "out of the box" performance Í would gíve ít 4 stars. Í have had other vacuums wíth more suctíon, so Í can't gíve ít my best ratíng for performance.

But Í am really put off by 1) the requíred maíntenance and 2) the flímsy warranty. Íts conceívable that whatever you spend on thís vacuum today, you should plan on spendíng an addítíonal 50% of that over the lífetíme of the vacuum. Í feel líke thats a hídden cost. And the requíred annual servíce ísn't even mentíoned on the Amazon product page! Í'm very díspleased wíth that fact.

Í had been hopíng that the Magnesíum would requíre less servíce, but ít seems to be a permanent part of the Oreck busíness (profít) strategy.
